AUCKLAND WAR MEMORIAL CENOTAPH AND COURT OF HONOUR. MORE THAN HALF OF COST RAISED. APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC.

For the building of a Cenotaph as the central feature of a Court, of Honour, together with massive steps and appropriate railings, the Auckland War Memorial Committee has collected the sum of £G660, and. is now appealing to the public to provide the balance > of £11,500 required to complete the work in accordance with plans prepared by the architects. As the amount raised by members of the committee and their friends is sufficient to ensure the major structures, a start has already been made with the work on the grounds immediately in front of the War Memorial Museum.

In a statement which, ho issued for publication, the chairman of the Citizens' Committee, Mr. A. S. Bankart, said that a sum of over £230,000 had been expended in completing the War Memorial Museum, and in co-operating with the civic authorities in making the roads of approach. Valuable Adjunct. While at no time had a cenotaph been a portion of the War Memorial Museum plan, Mr. Bankart said the committee considered, that the, erection, of such would be a very suitable adjunct and a fitting memorial to the solders who served in the Great War. With this end in view, and with a desire to improve the surroundings of the Domain, the committee had .resolved to erect a Court of Honour, and in the centre a Cenotaph which in every way would be a replica of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.

"A desire has been expressed," Mr. Bankart said, "that the museum should be illuminated by means of flood lights, so that tho memorial would be visible by night as well as by clay. To carry out the whole of these works the sum of £11,500 .'will be required, and with this end in view the committee has interested citizens who have subscribed £0600. The public: is now invited to find as much of the balance as possible."

The official opening of the museum will take place on Thursday, November 28, this being the only day next month which is suitable to the GovernorGeneral Sir Charles Fergussdn. In accordance with the special desire of the committee His Excellency will perform the opening ceremony and on the same occasion the cenotaph will be consecrated.
