SALE OF TOHEROAS.
DEALERS SHOULD BE
LICENSED.
BEDS STILL, AMPLE
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day.
A hint- is contained in the annual report of the Marine Department that regulations may be framed making it compulsory for dealers in toheroas to operate only under license. The report says that- the toheroa -bedsvon the.North Kaipara Beach and on Ahipara. Ninetymile Beach are well stocked, and appear capable of comfortably meeting the demands of established canneries and normal picking by the public. At times supplies find their way into Auckland fish shops, but- there are no means of obtaining returns of quantities which are supplied for sale. It is desirable that all persona exploiting these and other shell fish for commercial purposes should do so under license. We still lack that comprehensive and quantitative knowledge of the Dominion's toheroa resources obtainable by an organised survey of the beds, which is desirable as the basis for the best administration of this fishery, and for guidance of its future exploitation. During last season 2030 cases, valued wholesale at £5200, were packed at two canneries.
