EDUCATION BOARD.
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS FIXED
The Auckland Education Board met this morning, Mr. A. Burns presiding.
On the recommendation of the senior inspector it was decided to ask the Department to approve of the appointment of an additional assistant at Brixton Road school until the end of the present year in order to relieve the large classes at the institution. The Department wrote suggesting that the commencing date of the 1930-31 school year should be Monday February 2, and that the term holidays should be as follows:—First term from Monday, February 3, to Friday, May 9, two weeks; second term, from May 26 to August 22, two weeks and one day; and third term, from September 9 to December 19, six weeks. It was decided to adopt the schedule, which is similar to that of the present year. Regret was expressed by the Department 0 that it could not approve of a grant for the purpose of providing swimming baths at the Auckland Training College. The Brixton Road (Mount Eden) school committee urged the erection of a separate infant department at the institution. It was reported that an application for a grant was before the Department. In connection with the suggestion that a special class be established at Hamilton for backward children, the advisory inspector (Mr. T. Finch), after investigating the matter, recommended that it be deferred until the beginning of next year. Consideration of the desirability of instructing children in the matter of safety relating to traffic was referred to the executive committee, which is to receive a deputation headed by the chief traffic inspector (Mr. G. R. Hogan).
