OFFICERS' DANCE.
The quarterdeck of H.M.s. Diomede was a scene of gaiety last evening, when a farewell dance was given by the officers of the New Zealand Squadron, ; who are departing for England this week. Chinese lanterns and bright-coloured flags were used with great effect in the decorations, and excellent music was provided by a volunteer band comprised of seamen "from the H.M.s. Diomede and H.M.s. Dunedin. In a shed on the wharf supper was served, and the tables looked most attractive with the vases of Iceland poppies that were arranged on them. Around the walls flags were draped, and tiny Chinese lanterns suspended from the" ceiling made a very pretty sight. The guests were received at the gangway on arrival by Commander L. V. Wells, D.S.O.
