SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

There was a very large gathering of members at the monthly meeting of the Manurewa branch of the League of Mothers, the president (Mrs. C. S. McCallum) occupying the chair. The guest of the occasion was Mrs. Ferner, president of the Auckland Community Sunshine Association, who gave an address on the work of the association. • # * * The Fabian Society of Auckland held a lively debate at their rooms in Unity Hall on Saturday evening, when Mr. Rodwell, M.A., gave an interesting talk on taxation, more especially in reference to New Zealand. Mr. McLean was in the chair, and among the speakers were Mesdames Benfie-ld, Mackie, Miss Greville and Messrs. Martin, Montgomery, Anderton, Harrison and Boswell. • • • • A party was given by Mrs. S. C. Scott, of Panmure Road, on Saturday evening, when dancing, music and competitions passed away a jolly evening. The ballroom was canopied in mauve and pink streamers, with long strands of balloons, the lounge in gold and rose, the covered-in balconies, which served as supper rooms, were in daffodil flowers, streamers, and hanging baskets of ferns. The hall was decorated in Ted, green and gold streamers, and the supper room in pink arid blue, with, bowls of Iceland poppies. Mrs. Backhurst received her guests gowned in fawn crepe de chine and lace; Miss Ethel Backhurst's frock was white crepe de chine, ■with overdress of white georgette, silver lace and posy of silver. An enjoyable concert was given by Mrs. G. Moore and Miss M. Daly at, the Unity Hall, Queen Street, to a large and appreciative audience. Miss Daly's pupil orchestra's overture, "Eepasz Band," was well received, as also a selection from "Maritana," "Beethoven's Minuet in 6," and a violin solo, "Iμ Cygnc," by IT. Cavit, and "Scotch Airs' , by C. Hooton. Mrs. More staged a humorous play entitled •"Great Aunt liartha/' which was cleverly acted by L. Greenhough. J. Burke, A. Kidd, B. Dakes, M. Webb, F. Kevey. Other .items were: "I've Got a Pain in My Sawdusf, and "Every Day Dolly," recited by J. Kidd and'E.. Everitt; a pretty fairy play entitled "Jennie's Visit to Fairyland," the parts being taken by T. Walibanks, D. Hobroyd. L. Clifton, P. Brewer, G. Knight, A. Kidd, J. Nolton. A grape-vine dance was given by Miss V. Cantell which was pretty and graceful. c * * ♦ ♦ Last Saturday evening the Takapnna Girl Guides held their annual dance in the Bowling Club house at Bayswater. The Mayoress.. Mrs. Julius Williamson, on behalf of the Takapnna Guides' Committee, made a presentation to Miss Molly Cambridge, who is leaving the Takapuna Company to take a position in the North Shore Company.
