GREEN LIGHTS.

PEDESTRIAN CONTROL.

AUTOMATIC SYSTEM SUGGESTED,

A suggestion that a system of automatic traffic control should be adopted at some points in Auckland will be made to the City Council on Thursday evening by Mr. G. Ashley. Mr. Ashley has prepared.a report in support of his suggestion, and etated that such a system of co~trol was suitable not only for vehicular traffic, but also for pedestrians. He considered protection of the pedestrian to be lacking in Auckland. During Ms recent Australian visit, he inspected a system in Melbourne. On the appearance of a green light pedestraiane would cross as a body, for a given period, with the assurance of perfect safety, whereas, in Auckland, the traffic official was concerned only with vehicles, and the pedestrian had to run the gauntlet. Under the Melbourne system the operation of the change was timed to suit the conditions obtaining at any particular intersection. The Melbourne Town Council and the Tramways Board were whole-hearted in their approval of the system. In Wellington a beginning had been made in automatic traffic control, and the extension of the system was contemplated. The nature of a particular system should be the subject of consideration by Auckland City Council in making its. decision.
