TRAFFIC PROBLEM.

KHYBER PASS CORNER.

COMPLAINT FROM MOTORISTS

BOARD DEFERS DECISION.

Traffic problems at the intersection of Khyber Pass and Mountain lioad were dealt with by a deputation from the Auckland Automobile Association, which waited on the Auckland Transport Board this morning. The deputation consisted of Mr. A. Grayson, president, and Messrs. G. W. Hutchison, H. Butcher, and G. Henning. Motorists wishing to turn into Park Road were delayed by trams that stopjJed on the Newmarket side of the intersection, said Mr. Grayson, and there would be less interruption if the stop were moved to the westward. A traffic tally had shown there were 200 motor cars travelling up Khyber Pass for every 20 down Mountain Road, and the association's suggestion was intended to improve conditions for traffic generally. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, asked whether the appointment of a> traffic officer to control the intersection at busy times would meet the association's wishes, but Mr. Grayson said this would not avoid the check caused by having the tram stop in its present position. There might be occasions when a traffic officer should be on duty at the point. Mr. E. J. Phelan said all local bodies in Auckland had adopted the attitude that trams should stop before crossing an intersection, rather than immediately afterwards, and the association's proposal would mean departing from that practice. This was admitted by Mr. Grayson, but he considered the conditions warranted a change in the present case. A letter from the Auckland City Council stated that on a recent morning 21 motor cars were counted entering Khyber Pass from Mountain Road, and 190 entered Park Road from the lower end of Khyber Pass. The City Council also expressed its disapproval of a site proposed for a tramway shelter on the reserve at the corner/ as this would interfere- with visibility, and would be a danger to traffic. i The board deferred questions involved for further consideration.
