INTELLIGENT SEALS.
Seals, as every circus-goer knows, are intelligent animals. But even their instincts when in their wild state are marvels in themselves. They have, for instance, a mysterious sense that tells them just how wide a field of ice is, so that they know when they can swim under it. Seals cannot remain below the surface for longer thaji 20 minutes without drowning. They also know when it is worth while to start boring the ice for a bobbing hole, and never ■waste time on ice that is too thick to dig through. When- a mother seal leaves her pup on an ice-floe to go marketing, she frequently travels a great distance and remains away .fishing for hours at a time. Meanwhile, the ice-floe itself drifts a considerable distance with the wind and currents. Nevertheless, the mother seal always comes right back to the right ice cake, comes up in her own bobbing hole and immediately finds her waiting pup.
