RAYON AND ITS USES.
Rayon is usually thought of as a fabric (cloth), but it really is a textile (yarn), and should be reckoned with accordingly. Rayon is a very heavy thread, man-made, much heavier than silk, and,is used to weight silk much more effectively than any other material. Because of its weight, it has more weave or threads to the square inch than silk. Rayoii has been woven into practically every material, not so successfully as yet in chiffon. . This fibre was originally chosen to brighten dull material and give lustre and because it dyes differently from any other material, usually'taking the lighter and brighter sheen. One of the most successful uses thus far is in the making of transparent velvet. It seems to be impossible to duplicate this kind of material with any other textile. Rayon is also made into a fur-like fabric,.which shows only a small pile or hair, and is dyed in the shades of the various animal furs or in other shades. The finished article is a very pretty material, used effectively for couch coverings. Asperic is also a new rayon goods, containing 75 per cent Tayon and 25 per cent wool, similar to kasha cloth in appearance. . The original reason for incorporating rayon with other yarn was because of its weight and its lustre, but since the vogue calls for dull fibres, manufacturers; are' experimenting with it now to obtain a dull effect. This is especially desirable in hosiery, and a dull rayon will probably be on the market shortly.
