NOTES FROM TAKANINI.
J. T. Jamieson was called upon to saddle liis charges sixteen times at Avondale, seven on the first day and nine on the second day. Ho had a good spin with the team, winning three, twic-3 second and twice third. Snowplane ran a creditable race on the first day at Avondale, being prominent a great part of the journey and finished fifth. Although on the small side her turn is not far off. Pure Tea and Rose Willonyx were both given a run at Avondale but failed to catch the judge's eye and finished behind the first division. Time may improve this pair. High Finance soon found her old speed and was in front early in the sprint at Avondale. With a race or two she is bound to again prove a profitable proposition. Vali and Taurua raced fairly well but did not run up to expectations, although the latter was in the firing line at the finish in the Mount Albert Handicap. • Prince Humphrey, who ran fourth in the Avondale Cup and did not face the starter on the second day, has been allotted 8.12 in the Mitchelson Cup. The son of Duke Humphrey can be relied on to be "knocking at the door" if started. Road work is still the order for W. Goscomb's string, including White Wings. Prince of Orange is making good headway in hie work, as is the Day Comet mare Night Comet. Sister White is looking very well and should . shortly be found making her debut on the turf. Mashoor, although working well, is net quite ready yet. The Tippler colt and Waiau Lady were companions in a half-mile flutter on the plough last Tuesday morning, both shaping well. The former, a big upstanding "horse, is likely looking, while the latter, who is by Nassau, may show up to better advantage very soon. Gay Cavalier, by Chesterfield— Elysfon
mare, Lord Willonyx, and the Chief Ruler—Giggle colt were given a sprint down the.straight and moved nicely. None of these will be asked to carry silk for some time. Serang (N. Maguire), Principal (G. Jennings) and Night Comet (C. Walters) were sent over a couple of fences last Tuesday and all gave pleasing displays. Principal, who is by Thespian —Royal Exchange, jumped straightest and with plenty of dash, and may prove a good sort. Polyxena reeled off a round of pace work in good style and is now looking very healthy and in good heart. On Thursday morning Vali and In the Shade came 'through a good working gallop, the latter pleasing most, and he looks the part to collect a stake in the near future. The Absurd —Bronze gelding Envoy, who .proved useful last season and has yet to race this season, is in fairly good nic'k and should strip well when again asked to carry silk, as he is in good heart and is getting through some lively pace work. King Willonyx is still out of action and he may bo enforced to a respite for a few weeks. Imperial Prince., who looks a picture, is moving very freely in his work and will be a more difficult proposition to his opposition next outing. Holimond, after foaling to Lucullus ; was sent to the Auckland Stud Company's farm a fortnight ago to be mated with the English sire Whirlwind.
