AUCKLAND ORPHANS GATHER.
EVENING IN SCOTS HALL. The influence of talking pictures on the English language was referred to by Professor Maxwell Walker, who presided at the fortnightly gathering of the Auckland Orphans' Club in the Scots Hall on Saturday evening. "Already many slang words have crept into daily use, which cannot be found in auj dictionary," said Professor Walker. He stressed the value of preserving tiio English language as the national tongue throughout the British Ejnpivp. A large a'tendance at the-gathering included representatives from the Te Aroha and Rotorua clubs, and Captain P. Upton and officers and cadets from the steamer Northumberland. The cadets' band contributed to the programme.
It was announced by the chairman that the club's orchestra would attend the gathering of the Rotorua Orphans' Club on Saturday, October 2G, and that a concert would be held at Rotorua on the Sunday evening, October 27, in aid of the children in hospital suffering from infantile paralysis. Special train arrangements had been made for members wishing to maka tlio trip to Rotorua,
