NARROW ESCAPE.

AERIAL TRAGEDY AVERTED. (United Service.) PANAMA, September 22. Private Daniel Smith, of the Army Service Division, and a wireless operator, Deuter, were together in the rear seat of a bombing aeroplane 2000 ft above the Gatun Lake when Smith stumbled and fell through the bombing compartment. He clutched the tape of a parachute on which Deuter was sitting and drew Deuter's parachute with him.

Smith pulled the rip-cord of his own parachute and landed safely. The pilot and two observers continued the flight unaware of the accident until they discovered Deuter unconscious.
