A British Gazette announces tlie ap- j pointment of Mr. Ernest Barkley Raikes as King's Counsel. Mr. A. Main, secretary of the Waitemata Power Board, has been appointed returning officer for all purposes where a poll of ratepayers is to be taken. Mr. 6. S. Lynde, chief mechanical engineer of the New Zealand Railways, arrived by the Limited this morning and is staying at Hotel Cargen. Arrivals at the Star Hotel are: Mr. and Mrs. J.. Jurry (Wellington), Mr. J. D. Speeding, Mr. B. Hughes (Sydney), Mr. T. A. White (Hastings), Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Hall (Whangarei). Those at the Royal Hotel include: Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Glasson (Sydney), Mr. C. P. Cocks, Mr. S. Kelly, Mr. R. Allen (Hamilton), Mr. R. Chapman (Christchurch), Mr. F. Bayle (Mangaweka). Mr. N. C. Andrew, Mr. J. E. Hanralty (Wellington), Mr. J. Price (Matamata), Mr. and Mrs. Busch (Thames), Mr. W. G. Goode (Cliristchurch) are staying at the Albert Hotel.
Mr. P. R. Angus, assistant-chief engineer of the New Zealand Railways, arrived from Wellington this morning to go to the Otahuhu workshops with the 300 business men who will be in the first train to go over the Westfield deviation to-morrow.
