COAL ON FIRE.
SHIP'S BURNING CARGO. (Received 10.30 a.m.) ALBANY, this day. The Knockfierna arrived at King George's Sound with 1000 tons of coal smouldering and giving off a powerful gas. It is difficult to ascertain how far the fire has penetrated, but it has been decided to flood the hold. CHECKING JOY-RIDERS. AMENDMENT OF ENGLISH LAW. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, September 20. The borrowing of a motor car without permission will become a punishable offence if the recommendation of the Council of the Magistrates' Association is adopted by the Government. This is the outcome of a prolonged controversy over a weakness of the law, which of late has been responsible for a tremendous increase in the number 'Of cars taken by joyriders and then abandoned, frequently in a damaged condition.
