HISTORIC RUNNYMEDE.

WANTED FOR THE NATION. (British Official Wireless.) , RUGBY, September 20. Historic Runnymede, where the Magna Charta was signed by King John in 1215, /is likely to become a national possession. A project is on foot for acquiring the property, which lies between Staines and Windsor, and for handing it over to a national trust to: preserve for the public. Runnymede is a meadow in the parish of Egham, Surrey, on tho south bank of the Thames. It is celebrated in connection with the' signature of the Magna Carta by King John on June 15, 1215, It has been disputed whether the ceremony took place actually in the meadow or on Magna Carta (or Charter Island) lying off it. The charter itself indicates Runnymede by name, but this may have included the island. The latter is the traditional site, and was in 1217 the meeting place of Henry HI. and Louis (afterwards Louis VIII.) of France.
