A SIDE STREET.
Up the steep slope it blindly follows itself, Crookedly, narrowly, house £ac \ n ,& Nakedly staring each at the others dlsA wind-swept street, but tired and hagage of tears scarring its dirty face. Up the steep slope, tired women follow with slow, • , ... Dreamless and disillusioned steps that falter, . And children meet them in their rags and hungry smile. The rich stride quickly up the hill, unheeding Disowning scorn curling their lips the while. Up the steep slope, Night slowly rolls her shadows, Covering the half-naked children that romp in doorways. One suddenly starts up—"The moon!" "The moon!" And the whole street is running silver, ■ And a newsboy saunters past, whistling a silver tune. —CHRISTINE COMBER, Auckland.
