ngaruawahia. The Ngaruawahia Tennis Club held a social gathering in the Masonic Hall on Thursday night. Excellent music was supplied by Miss O'Sullivan, Mrs. Sampson and Mr. Rogers. The Minister of Public Works has advised the county council that it is proposed to seek Cabinet's approval of a grant of £750 for the erection of the bridge over the Kapowai River, in the Coroglen district. The Tauranga Electric Power Board has authorised the extension of reticulation from Tahawai to Athenr<"\ in the Ka-ti-kati Riding, also an extension on a byroad in the ' neighbourhood of Katlkati township, A request from the County Council to instal electricity at the Te Puna quarry was granted. Tt is expected that further large orders will be received from outside local bodies. For some years past Mrs. E. A. Brnce acted as honorary secretary to Ft. Mark's Horticultural Society, during which time she did really good work in its interests. On withdrawing from <the position the society this week presented the retiring secretary with a handsome engraved bowl as a slight recognition of her valued services. At the quarterly meeting of the Municipal Brass Band, the Mayor presiding, 'the Statement of receipts and expenditure showed a very satisfactory position. It was decided to place on order additional 'Instruments, including a Boosey latest model marching drum. It was_ unanimously resolved to hold a gala -night on November 5. WHAKATANE. The montlilv meeting of the Whnkatanf County Couucil was hold on Tuesday. It was resolved that the council sunporl requests made to the Railway Depai'tmonj to have an overhead crossing constructed at Awakeri. The Hon. A. T. Ngata wrote that hf proposed to visit the Whakatane anc Opotiki districts soon after the end of the session to discuss the matter of impair native rates with the native land owners and the local bodies concerned.
