N.Z. TROTTING CUP.

DOMINION'S BIGGEST STAKE OVER THIRTY HORSES ELIGIBLE. ENTRIES CLOSE NEXT THURSDAY. No race in the Dominion creates more interest than the New Zealand Trotting Cup, which is run in November each year. This is not to be wondered at,

seeing that the stake, £4000, is easily the biggest attached to any race, handicap or classic, in either trotting or galloping, given in New Zealand. But this year will see the race decided under conditions which differ considerably from . those of previous years, and instead of : the race being confined to one effort, it will be run in two divisions and a final, the first four horses in each division contesting the final. Although the stake is £4000, the most any horse can get is £1600, being £iioo for winning a heat, and £1000 for winning the final. It is, by the way, the only race in the Dominion where more money is distributed among the placed horses than goes to the winner. Again, the handicapping is going to see a departure from the old order. In the past a handicapper could place a horse on any mark he thought fit, but under the new system of handicapping he cannot do this in the case of more than one horse who will be entered. For instance, Dundas Boy went 4.22 at his last start, but he must be on the limit, 4.23, and the same applies to Pluto, 4.24 4-5. As entries close on Thursday next, it may be opportune to give a list of the

horses now racing and eligible for the race. They are:—

From the above list it will be seen that several horses are eligible only because they have been handicapped to go 4.20 at some time.
