SPECTACLE CASE CLUE Australian Crook Arrested For Alleged Shooting. IDENTIFICATION BY CABLE. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Detectives yesterday arrested a man in connection with the robbery at Rozelle on September 14 when a constable was shot. During a chase the robber dropped a spectacle ease and this led to his arrest. The case bore, embossed, the name of a New Zealand maker, and a cable was sent to New Zealand police asking them to interview the optician who supplied the glasses in an effort to ascertain the owner.
The return cable gave the name of a man who had served a sentence in New Zealand. He is an Australian with a record here. Yesterday the police saw the man and to allay his suspicions, one simulated drunkenness. As the suspect was approached, he was arrested and charged with shooting Constable Grinham with intent to murder.
Last Saturday liight there were three sensational hold-nps in the suburbs ot Sydney. They all happened within two hours, and the police believe that they were the work of one man. The bandit made two abortive attempts, but at Rozelle he held up the proprietor of a store and decampcd with £20. The desperado was chased by the police, and a revolver duel ensued in which twelve shots were fired. Constable Grinham was shot in the groin and taken to hospital. The assailant escaped, and subsequent searches for him proved fruitless.
