LADIES' ASSOCIATION,

SATURDAY'S MATCHES REVIEWED,

Saturday last saw the commencement of the Auckland Ladles' Hockey Associations senior grade knock-out championship, in which Mount Eden met Y.W.C.A., and Arawa met Wesley, Somervllle (the holders of the cup) having a bye. The final match in connection with the junior grade championship cup was also played, Papatoetoe A and Wesley A being the contesting teams. The junior game between Papatoetoe, the leading team In the A section, and wesley, the leading team in the B section, was a good exhibition for junior players. Throughout the game Papatoetoe, last year's champions, had the better of the play. Wesley's weakness was in its defence, and time and time again this department found themselves unequal to Papatoetoe's superior combination. For Papat&etoe, Misses O'Hara, Richards, and Snelllng were the outstanding players,- whilst for Wesley, Misses Cullum, Moore, and Bathgate, rendered valuable service. ■ In the senior grade game, between Mount Eden and Y.W.C.A., Y.W.C.A. came out the winners after a hard-fought contest. Mount Eden were one short, and had to regrade one junior player, and were on fairly even terms with Y.W.C.A., who also had' to call upon several juniors. During the first half each team- scored two goals, Y.W.C.A. scoring their two first. The game was of tho up-and-down variety, Y.W.C.A. seeming to have what little advantage was offering. Almost at the close of the game, Miss Hinge notched Y.W.C.A.'s third goal, making the score 3 to 2in her team's favour. The game ended; without change in the score. For Y.W.C.A., Misses Hinge, McLoughlin, and Mrs. Saw-! bridge are worthy of special mention, while for Mount Eden, Mrs. Nash and Miss Dawson played good games. Mr. R. Avery controlled the game. Of the game between Wesley and Arawa little can be said, as the match was very one-sided. Arawa' won fh'e' toss, and elected to play Up-hill during the first- half. Wesley took up the attack from the outset, and continued to storm the Arawa circle throughout the game, the ball seldom passing over the half-way line into the Wesley half of the field. Only for the strenuous efforts at defence put up by Arawa the score would have been much bigger than it actually was—Wesley 2, Arawa 0. Mr. 0. Radcliffe controlled the game. Nest Saturday will see the commencement of the junior grade knock-out championship games, when Mount Eden will play Papatoetoe, and Papakura will play Y.W.C.A. in the A section, and Wesley will meet Wesley B in the B section. In the senior grade, the two winners of last Saturday's games will meet to decide who shall challenge Somervllle for the Knock-out Cup the following Saturday. Word has been received that the proposed visit from a Manawatu ladies'" representative team cannot now be made. A team from Whangarci and a team from Waihi are desirous of visiting Auckland at an early date. MANAWATU V. NORTH TARANAKI. ELTHAM, this day. The Manawatu ladies' hockey team played North Taranaki yesterday, the game being a draw, three goals each.
