FOR CHARITY.

RUGBY IN THE GLOOM. WHOLESALE BEATS RETAIL. r SPECTACULAR GAME BY ELECTRIC LIGHT. For the first time in Auckland, a Rugby match was played under electric light at Blandford Park last evening, and the game all through was as spectacular as any game could be. It was a very entertaining exhibition for the thousand or so people who attended, and at time it wa3 all very amusing. Occasionally a ruck would develop in a shaded patch of semi-gloom, then, out of it would shoot a man with the ball, and .before the opposition had realised it, a brilliant passing bout was in full swing. The teams represented the Wholesale and Retail houses of Auckland, and after a particularly fast game, Wholesale won by 16 points to 10. The teams were:— Wholesale.—Janson, Wade, McGregor, Pearcey, Cammick, Wales, McCrystal, Soloman, Hurt, D'Authreau, Colebourne, Scott, Bunting, Williams, Pierce.

Retail. —Pearson, Hill, Lucas, Falwasser, Berridge, Eraser, Inglis, Courtney, Von Rotter, Smith, Clark, McCorkindale, Cooper, Knock, and Kemp.

Both teams had a number of senior players and Auckland reps, among them. There was some fast up and down field play at the opening, Falwasser and Lucas thrilling with rare individual rims, swerving and side-stepping in great style. The first score came when Retail heeled the ball from a scrum at half-way, Fraser scoring behind the posts after a great-run in which he dummied half the Wholesale team. Lucas goaled. The players threw the ball, about in the open, telling way. Within a minute or two the Wholesale backs set out in full cry for the goal line, and after a fine run Pierce scored ,for Wales to convert.

Rallying determinedly, Wholesale rushed play to the other end, and after some solid forward work D'Authreau dribbled through to score far out, Cammick just missing the kick. Berridge next sent out a weak pass, letting Wholesale away again. The effort was a good one, but Wade just failed. Wholesale led at half-time by 8 points to 5.

In the second spell, play was just as fast and spectacular. Retail opened out with a fine piece of work, Lucas darting away to send Hill racing down the line, but.the winger was pushed into touch a few yards ftpm the line. Again from halfway" Hill clapped on the pace but' was tackled just in tinu. Keeping up a solid pressure, Retail had their opponents, defending strenuously for a time. Then Fraser cross-kicked, and Lucas dribbled through to score under the posts. He converted. With a great concerted forward rush which went almost the length of thetfield, Wholesale swept all before them and Hurt scored, hut Wales missed the kick. Determined efforts were made by Wholesale now to increase their score, and after some pretty passing bouts, Wales scored near the posts, and Cammick converted. The players were cheered as they left the field. Mr. L. W. Guiney was referee. In the curtain-raiser, Grammar Old Boys juniors beat University juniors by eight points to six after a fast game. Mr. J. G. Wales was referee. The money taken at the gate,, about £50, will be given to charity, and the money.for tickets sold has yet to be added.
