CALLIOPE DOCK.

PROPOSED EXTENSIONS. QUESTION TO BE DISCUSSED. POSITION BETWEEN BOARD AND GOVERNMENT. A committee consisting of Messrs. M. TI. Wynyard, 11. R. Mackenzie, and T. I>. Clay has been set up by the Auckland Harbour Board to confer with representatives of the Government concerning the proposal to widen and lengthen Calliope Dock.

The decision was made at yesterday's meeting of the board, when the superintendent (Mr. 11. B. Burnett) reported that in 1927 the Prime Minister (Hon, J. G. Coates) was furnished with a conlidelitial report in regard to the proposal to extend the dock, and the present

Minister of Defence (Hon T. Wilford) bad now intimated that a sum had been included in the Naval Defence estimates for this year to cover the Government's contribution towards the cost of the work. A committee, comprising representatives of the Treasury, the Public Works- Department, Naval Services and the Solicitor-General had been set np to confer with members of the board relative to the scheme.

Mr. E. Aldridge, Government representative on the board and Mayor of Dcvonport, suggested that his name should be added to the committee, as he was keenly interested in any operations at Calliope Dock. The chairman (Mr. M. IT. Wynyard) thought that the three members mentioned were sufficient representation, as it was quite possible that conferences would have their venue at Wellington. The proposals would be discussed and the committee would report to the board in committee before definite decision was made. A member said that parochial interests did not enter into the matter. The committee should be adequate to deal with the question and report to the board. The majority of the board endorsed this opinion.
