IMPORTANT STEP.

Conference Of Leaders Of Empire To Be Held. DIFFICULTIES OF SITUATION. [{Australian Press Assn. —United Service.) (Received 2 p.m.) EDMONTON, September 11. A resolution endorsing the holding of a conference of the commercial and industrial leaders of the Empire and authorising an appointment committee to take such steps as are necessary in a conference with the Dominion Government and other interested bodies, was passed unanimously by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Convention on Wednesday. The resolution was hailed by the convention as the most important step yet taken by a body towards furthering Empire trade.

Et. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, Secretary for Dominions in the Baldwin Ministry, and who is visiting the convention, said that the business man alone could fully realise the difficulties of building up the Empire. The problems included different living conditions and wages, and in fact the Commonwealth was not a single political unit. It was necessary to show any step not only for the good of the Empire as a whole but also for the partners individually. A politician would either ignore the difficulties, and lis schemes would break down, or lie would realise the immensity of the problems and present blank refusal to act. Eusiness men alone could see the whole situation and present policies which a politician could safely follow.

"The country to the south is but a mere indication of what we can build up. Our resources are infinitely greater and our ability no less," lie concluded.
