ENGINEERS' GRIEVANCES.

GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS.

X.Z. EMPLOYEES BARRED?

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday,

A deputation representing the Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland branches of the Amalgamated Engineers ivill probably meet the Minister next Friday at Wellington to state their complaints against the new award. The same deputation while in Wellington will meet the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, in connection with the prohibition placed on New Zealand employers from competing in certain contracts let by the Government for bridge work. Mr. G. T. Thurston, secretary of the Engineers' Association, says that not only have tenders not been advertised in New Zealand for certain contracts, but New Zealand contractors have actually been prohibited from competing. The union has a list of these works, and will submit them to the Minister on Friday. This, says Mr. Thurston, is another cause for grave dissatisfaction. Many engineers are unemployed in New Zealand. yet contracts which would help the position are let outside the country.
