"WONDERFUL JAVA."
ATTCKLANDER'S ENTHUSIASM. DR. F. GORDON RETURNS. -A profound enthusiasm for the industry of the natives of Java is expressed by Dr. F. Gordon, who, after a trip of eight weeks to Australia and the East, returned to Auckland by the Makura yesterday. Java is a wonderful country, according to Dr. Gordon, with marvellous industry, although it is no place for a white man, to whom only the mountainous parts of the country are suitable. "Java has a teeming population of about 40,000,000," 'said Dr. Gordon, "and they are the hardest-working people I have ever seen. Every bit of available land is cultivated for growing rice, most of the heavy work being done by water buffaloes, the only cattle in the country. "The Dutch administration : there ia excellent," he continued, "and the cities, especially. Batavia • and Sourabaya, are filled with fine buildings - and pretty villas. They are up-to-date in every way,"
