W.C.T.U.
The meeting of the W.C.T.U. was held on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs. Cook presided. The thirty-sixth anniversary of franchise day was celebrated. The president spoke of the leading part the Women's Christian Temperance Union had taken in securing the franchise, and the splendid strenuous work the members throughout the Dominion, under the able leadership of Mrs. Kate Sheppard, had accomplished in gaining signatures
to the three petitions which were presented to Parliament. The third, which was the largest petition eo far ever presented to any Parliament in New Zealand or Australia, contained 31,874 names. Tho late Mrs. Daldy, of Auckland, took a leading part in this movement. Mrs. Kate Sheppard is still taking an active interest in all work that has for its object the best interests of women. Among the many Acts passed were those providing for Juvenile Courts, old age pensions, widows' pensions, State maternity hospitals, women appointed as assistant hospital inspectors, women J.P.'e, a. woman appointed on Board of Public Health, women doctors appointed to medical inspectors of schools, employment of school nurses, and many others. Great indignation was expressed that a brewery was to be built in Otahuhu, in spite of strong protests from the people in that district and from other organisations. Delegates were elected for the district convention in Onehunga. Miss McLay. Dominion organiser, spoke of the high ideals of the W.C.T.U., and of the forward movement to secure a ■million shilling fund to advance temperance sentiment in the Dominion.
