HOSPITAL AUXILIARY.
YEAR'S "WORK REVIEWED. DECREASE IN ACTIVITIES. In reviewing the work for the year, the report of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, presented this afternoon at the annual meeting, showed a decided decrease in the activities of the auxiliary. Owing to the poverty engendered by unemployment, there had been an exceptional increase in the number of sick poor in the hospital, and it had been necessary to confine the work to them. It was stated that the depot committee had received 2831 garments for the year, and had distributed 2873. Many donations had been received, both in cash and garments from the various ladies' associations. The winter months were especially severe, and extra help in fuel, as well as clothing, was given. One needy family was kept for six months. Possibly the explanation of the poor response received at street collection day was due to the fact that, on account of the appeal for the earthquake sufferers, the day had been postponed for a fortnight, said the report. The amount taken was less than half that taken at the two previous collections. Other special activities brought in various sums of money. Expenditure for the year amounted to £997, and the income" to £881. This showed an expenditure of £100 in excess of the revenue for the year. All the branches at Newmarket, Onehunga and .Mount Eden were reported to have had a successful year.
