TAXATION PROPOSALS.
ATTITUDE OF LABOUR.
PROMISE TO PRIME MINISTER. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. "The tax proposals of the Budget have not been shaken," was the declaration of Mr. Frasev (Wellington Central) from the Labour front benches during the final stages of the financial debate in the House of Representatives. He added that, as the Labour party had already stated, they would help the Prime Minister- to put them throughThey hoped he would meet them in regard to the primage duty. The whole House, including United members, would, he believed, breathe freely if the Prime Minister would let that go altogether; but, if not, that he would bring down a modification which would remove the prr-iage duty from the necessaries of life. Having helped the Prime Minister in that, the Labour party expected that Parliament this session, having given him the revenue he requested, would pass measures for social relief. They expected that in this Parliament the tragical question of unemployment would be dealt with. Then members could leave with the belief that, however much they had talked, they had made it impossible for a man to be obliged to walk around day after day hopelessly looking for work he was anxious to do but could not get. The Minister of Defence subsequently announced that.theGovernment would next session introduce legislation for insurance against unemployment.
