PAPATOETOE TOWN BOARD

WATER SUPPLY PROGRESS

The Papatoetoe Town Board last night granted permission to the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic Club to hold a sports gala on the recreation reserve on November 2, January 18 and April 7. A deputation from the new cluLk headed by the president, Mr. W. J. Hindman ? explained the club's objects and informed the board that running events would be held on the reserve and cycling races on the road until a suitable track was formed. Permission was granted to the club to make a charge of 1/ for adults and 3d for children. Preliminary trials of the pumping plant and motor installed at McLaughlin Mountain were dealt with in a report by the waterworks engineers, Messrs. Jones and Adams. It was stated the plant was now in operation and was delivering considerably more than the specified quantity of water, namely 80gals a minute. The official ten-hour test at full load would be run next week, when the watt meter was connected. Difficulty had been experienced in lowering the water level, it was stated, on account of the prevailing wet weather. Durnig the past week the service reservoir on the mountain had been completely filled and only slight leakages were reporter. Tests of the pipe line had been commenced and had proved satisfactory. The chlorinator for treating the water had been delivered on the site and would be assembled during the month. The sympathy of the board in connection with the illness of Mr. George Hosking, a member, was recorded, and the chairman, Mr. T. R. Smytheman, expressed a hope of his speedy recovery. Leave of absence was granted. Demonstrations of a new type of concrete roading material were given by Mr. W. J. Lopdell, a representative of an Auckland firm. A license was refused to Mr. Thomas Carroll, lessee of a billiard saloon in Shirley Road, in view of an unfavourable police report.
