PITIFUL SCENES.

Parents Powerless To Save Children. HORRIFIED SPECTATORS. (United Service.) (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 2. Children clasped in tlxe arms of their parents who were powerless to save them, were burned to death when a fire destroyed two shops and* houses at Smethwick. The Mac Donald family were all apparently overcome by the fumes while asleep. A shortage of water owing to a burst main handicapped the firemen. Meanwhile the pitiful screams of the trapped sufferers on the upper floors were heard above the roar of the flames. The spectators were horrified to see women jump from the windows. One from the fourth floor struck the pavement and died. All eleven bodies have been recovered but are unrecognisable.
