LOCAL BODIES.

MANUREWA TOWN BOARD

The Manurewa Town Board met last evening, the chairman (Mr. Geo. Gallaher) presiding. Messrs. W. T. Cox, W. Ferguson and W. Frost were absent.

Great South Road.—Correspondence received from Mr. N. Massey, M.P. for Franklin, in reference to the board's requests for assistance in meeting the heavy interest charges on the Great South Road reconstruction loins, included a copy of a letter Mr. Massey had received from the Minister of Public Works. The Minister's letter promised consideration of the board's representations in regard to "retrospective payments." in the course of discussion members expressed surprise that the Minister persisted in discussing this phase of the Great South Road finance when it had never been introduced by the board. It was decided to write to Mr. Massey and urge him to advise the Minister of his error.

Great South Road Beautification,—The chairman reported that the Great South Road Beautifying Society's representative had inspected the various reserves fronting the Great South Road through Manurewa, and had made various recommendations regarding the planting of the native trees kindly donated by Mr. Buttenvorth, of Papakura.

Great South Road Footpaths.—Referring to the board's decision to put down a 4ft strip of concrete on the western footpath in Great South Road, between the township and Halsey Road, Mr. G. A. Osborne asked what was to be done on the continuation of the path north of Halsey Road. The chairman pointed out that this would be surfaced with metal chips. Mr. Osborne drew attention to the rough state of the path on the eastern side of the road from the school to Corin Avenue. On his motion it was decided to have this portion repaired, also to utilise the £20 allotted for fencing it o£L
