SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
At the residence of her son, Mr. G.! P.. Smith, Lyall Bay, Wellington, Mrs. Emma Smith celebrated her eightieth birthday. Born in Auckland, August 12, 1840, in a Maori whare in Swanson Lane, now Swanson Street. Mrs. Smith is one of the old identities of Auckland, and has seen the city grow to its present fairness. She is now a resident of Wellington, in which city her husband died nine years ago. Her family consists of three sons, one of whom made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War, and seven daughters, and there are eleven grandchildren. Mrs. Smith enjoys perfect health and has many interesting recollections of her early days in Auckland. * » » * An enjovable evening was spent on Saturday when Miss Freda Adams, of Remuera, entertained a number of guests at Dominion Road. The rooms wei e decorated with gay coloured streamers and balloons. Among those present werc; —Mrs. P. Buck, mauve georgette; Miss M. Horn, lemon crepe de chine and black lacn; Miss B. Smith, shell pink clfarmaline; Miss R. Greenwood, lemon georgette, tiered and pleated; Miss W. Burton, orange crepe de chine; Miss E. Burton, gieen crepe de chine and green gold tulle; Miss E Tolley, pale pink tinsel bodice and pink; Miss T. Credin, bottle green crepe de chine and velvet; Miss G. Ollon, shell pink taffeta; Miss M. Fraser, cream crepe do chine and black ring velvet, Miss D. Watson, black georgette.
An enjoyable evening was spent last Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Bootes, of Stanley Bay, to the coming of age of their son Eric. Therooms were prettily decorated in a rainbow effect of balloons, streamers and various blooms. Novelties added to the enjoyment of the-evening. Mrs. Bootes received her guests wearing a frock ot cyclamen chiffon and lace to tone, and was ablv assisted by Miss D. Bootes, who wore a black pleated georgette frock and Spanish shawl. McNiel, pink taffeta and French shawl; Corbett, blue geoigette a.vl silver -ainc; Lil Lynch, black beaded georgette; Stella Lynch, black beaded georgette; T. Dunn, blue taffeta; Evon Lomas, black brocaded georgette and laee; Y. Lomas, shell pink beaded georgette; N. Lynch, cyclamen georgette; F. Lawrence, sea green satin and silvei lace; McCulough, mauve crepe de chine; J{. McNiel, peach embroidered crepe tie chine; Dolly Barter, peach taffeta; W. Bradfield, green with silver overdress; finest, green crepe de chine and diamante trimming; Lulu Low, rose crepe de chine and tinsel; Doni McCulough, cream netted silk; It. Lavkins, black crepe de chine; Connie Lawrence, ivory silk net and rosebud trimming.
A surprise party was held on Saturday evening at Mrs. Wallace's, Uolc Road. One Tree Hill, for her daughter •Janet. The house was decorated with spring blossoms. The young guests included Misses Pen Ford, Gwen Kingston. Joyce Herdmau, June Donald, Rona Gifford. Joan Carrick Robertson, Molly Mitchelson, Alison Huie, Marjorre Stiter, Tweet Mclndoe. Bub Suter, Fa: Buddie, Jean McCormiclc. Betty Buddie, Freda Suter, Olive Gaudin, Mary C'olebrook. Shirley Frater, Audrey Allison, Peggy Robertson, Dene Plummer, Marie Jones, Helen Carson, Winsome Airey. * *■ * ♦ An enjoyable time was spent on Friday, last, when friends gathered together at Mrs. A. M. Nicholson's .home in St. Luke's Road, Mount Albert, in honour of Miss M. Findlay and Xurse E. Reid, who are shortly leaving for China. The roorus were charmingly decorated with jonquils and daffodils, and Mrs. Nicholson received the guests wearing a frock of powder blue georgette with beaded embroideries. Musical items were rendered by Miss Beryl Smith. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Reid, Nurse E. Reid, Miss M. Findlay, Miss B. Smith, Miss U. Smith, Mrs. Galium, Miss JI. Beaney, Mrs. Crawford, Mrs. Nicholson, Miss M. McCulloch and Miss 0. Beanev.
