THE NEW RAILWAY.
Railway construction works' in New Zealand have a way of moving , so slowly that they come to be regarded almost as part of Nature's order, and there is a mild shock of surprise when the first train actually runs over the line. It is a good many years since the Westfleld deviation was proposed. Yesterday the first goods train ran over the line, and from this on the deviation will be used freely for this class of traffic. The putting of the line into use is an interesting mark in the development of Auckland: Those who planned the original railway took the straightest way out. They could not bo expected to foresee how quickly Auckland would develop, and what a tax on railway finance would be the haulage of trains up the steep grade to Remuera. The deviation will cut out this expensive grade. It will also help to open up suburbs in territory which, when the original line was built, was the country as distinct from the town. From now on pressure on the old ramshackle congested station will be relieved, and so will the feelings of Auckland people. ,
