TAXATION REMITTED.
TROTTING MEETING TO-DAY.
FOR A WORTHY CAUSE
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Keporter.) WELLINGTON, this day.
Government taxation will be remitted on the trotting meeting held in Auckland to-day in aid of the earthquake relief funds. The concession was finally agreed to yesterday by the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, in his capacity as Minister of Stamp Duties, following representations made by Mr. G. Baildon, Mayor of Auckland, who pointed out particularly that the Government's agreement to forego its taxation would greatly assist the success of the meeting, for which all assistance was being voluntarily given in view of worthiness of the cause. There would be no free admissions, members' complimentary tickets having been abolished.
The Prime Minister said there was no statutory authority for granting the remission of taxation, but in deference to the representations he would make the concession, which would require to be validated by legislation.
