DISPUTE SETTLED.

PAPATOETOE WATER SCHEME

EMPLOYMENT OF LOCAL LABOUR. BOARD AUTHORISES PAYMENT.

A settlement was.reached this morning by the Papatoetoe Town Board in its dispute with the contractors for the water scheme. After a conference between the chairman of the board, Mr. T. R. Smytheman, the chairman of the works committee, Mr. E. S. Sorensen, and Mr. Gosse, of Gosse and Mullens (contractors), the parties agreed upon the question of the employment of local labour.

The contractors were given authority to employ ten men, wlju were members of their permanent staff, and Ihey agreed to engage only local labour for the unskilled work. The total men engaged t'.t present was 2(5, and this number would be increased on Monday to 30.

As a result of the conference authority was given for the payment of a cheque for £5352 which had been held up by the board.
