CALCULATION

A ship from .the West Indies was wrecked, and the skipper and nineteen men escaped in a boat. Nine of. the men were white, and the other ten black. The rations ran low, and the skipper said that ten of the men must go overboard. But he wished to seem fair, so he lined the men up in" such a way that bv counting out ten men, and. throwing every eighth man overboard, be would get rid of the blacks. How did be arrange the men ? He first place three white men at the head of the line, then two black ones, next one more white, followed by three blacks, and these with two whites j he next placed one more black and one white, then.three blacks and two whites, and finally one black. The trouble was the blacks saw the catch before the schemer got through his calculation.
