G. Entrican presiding, in the absence of the president, Mrs. Mulgan. Theacting president announced that the association was sponsoring a series of bridge evenings, to be held shortly in the University College, in aid of the proposed Chair of Fine Arts. The speaker for' the evening was the Rev. Wilma Constable, co-pastor of the Unitarian Church, who took as her subject "Women in the Church." Mre. Constable dealt .with her subject in a most interesting manner, giving it as her opinion that churches in the past had lost a great deal by excluding women from the work of . the. ministry, especially in the promulgation of doctrines and. creeds, and in helping women in the spiritual difficulties of adolescent life. * * * * ■ Mrs. Heath Preest was hostess at an enjoyable party at her home, "Lanant," Tahora Avenue, Remuera, when Miss Lillian Quinn was entertained at an evening in honour of her approaching marriage. The reception hall, drawing room, etc., were gay with Iceland poppies in large brass bowls, while the din-1 ing room, where supper was served, was decorated with spring flowers in crystal and silver vases. ; Mrs. Heath Preest received the guests in lemon georgette and , silk net. I). Patterson. Numbers from well-known comic operas were given by the troupe, "The Geisha/k "Arcadians," -7, "The . Country Girlf? "Pirates of Penzance,? "Miss Gibbs," and "Going Up," aU - of<; which greeted with applause. Soloists, on the programme were: * Mrs." Chisholm, Mrs,., Edmonds, Miss Frieda Crosher, Miss Joyce Crosher, Miss Enid Bruton, Mr. Marks, and Mr. A; Warbrick. A pretty ballet, entitled, ."In a Persian Market," was a good item, and .the spirited dancing of Miss Enid Bruton and Miss Freda. Crosher was also a great asset to the company. The Kohimarama Musical, Literary and Dramatic Society provided a rather unusual, but very humorous, -entertainment for their members and friends last Thursday evening, when the Kohi Hall was arranged as a Court of Justice, and a breach of promise case between Miss I. Love (plaintiff) and Mr. A. Ninny (defendant) occupied the major portion of the programme. The members of the society responsible for the evening were: Miss I. Love, Miss Lorna Andrew; counsel for plaintiff, Mr. Cooney, sen.; defendant, Mr. Jack Hawley; counsel for defendant,- Mr. A. Brown; judge, Mr. W. H. Madili; clerk of court, Mi'. Jack Sweeney; foreman of the jury, Mr. Percy WhHe; jury, Messrs. Barnes, Hurst and Todd, Mrs. Gilbert; chief witness, Mrs. E. G Tyrell; Miss. "A." the mysterious Miss Spenceley Walker; Mr. 7? " 11,o r Tove (nln >nt ; ff's ' father), Mr. E. G. Tyrell; Mr. Sherlock Holmes (deteci:_ve). Mr. Cooney. jun. At the conclusion cf the case a short dance was held. * *

Last night, on the Central wharf, the French sailors were again entertained by the members of the Navy League at a jolly dance. The wharf shed was gaily decorated with coloured flags and bunting, and over the dance floor large hanging globes > composed of fairy lights entwined with lycopodium, Were suspended. The decorations had been done by men from H.M.s. Philomel. Every evening the floor has been crowded'with dancers, and a thoroughly enjoyable time has been spent. Last evening Mr. C. Morris gave an interesting display of conjuring, and" Mr. Collett acted as interpreter for the men. Amongst the ladies who have helped to organise the dance 3 were: Mrs. Gallaugher (president of the Navy League), Mrs. H. Rainger, Sirs. Glasgow, Miss Morton, Mrs. Cleland, Mrs. Cable, Mrs. Shearer, Miss Watts, Miss Herrold, Mrs. Webber, Mrs. Wright, Miss Statham, Mrs. Charles Smith, Mrs. Norbury, Mrs. Mitchelson. The members of the girls' committee arranged for a number of girls to be present as partners for the sailors.
