LAID A SMALL "DOUBLE."
MARRIED HAN FINED. "THINK OF THE ADVT." A plea of guilty was entered by Percy McCarthy, a young man, charged at the Police. Court this morning with publishing' a double chart on the Wellington racesChief Detective Hammond said a man who had taken, a double at £S to 2/ with McCarthy complained to the police that, McCarthy had refused to pay out on the winning double which he said, he had. taken. "However, since the case first came before the Court I am satisfied that McCarthy was quite right in not paying out to- complainant, who had not won the double," added Mr. Hammond. "McCarthy has. shown; m.e his chart, and X am. now convinced that complainant was wrong," McCarthy was a decent young married man, and had never been in any trouble before. Mr. J. J.. Sullivan, who represented McCarthy, said he was grateful to Mr. Hammond for making it clear to the Court that defendant had not "scaled" a man for his double. The man had not backed the winning double. "McCarthy is only in a small way in the betting business, and .in view of the humiliation he has suffered I would ask your Worship .to deal leniently with him." said counsel. "But think of the good advertisement he has got," said Mr, Hunt, who fined the young man £10.
