BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
GREAT SOUTH ROAD. SCHEME FOR IMPROVEMENTS. A meeting of the Great South Road Beautifying Society was held in the Otahuhii Borough Council Chambers on Wednesday evening, Mr. G. W. Hutchinson presiding, with representatives of local bodies from Papakura to the city being present. The chairman said that a promise had been made of a three-faced clock to be erected at the triangle at Ellerslie. With reference to co-operation with the Govenrment in regard to overhead bridges, the secretary was instructed to thank them for consideration shown. The proposed stock route was discussed, and it was shown that it would traverse dedicated roads with the exception of about one and a-half miles. Legislation would be necessary for this, but a commission coukl not allocate the cost to local bodies until dedication was effected. The Manurewa delegate stated that his board was going to fence their footpaths, which event' would obviate any interest in a stock route. As a means of expediting the work it was resolved to communicate with local members of Parliament and the Minister of Public Works. The scheme to plant rambling roses amongst the hedges along the. South Road is well advanced. Some 325 plants will be forwarded shortly, and planted when the ground is prepared for them. The Tamaki River bridge was discussed and the advisability of bringing it into alignment with the road on each side is to be brought under- the notice of the Highways Board. The Otahuhu delegate reported that the planting of trees between the Nixon Monument and the Tamaki River will commence shortly, and that the reserve round the monument will receive attention.
