COURT OF HONOUR.

CENOTAPH TO BE ERECTED. WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM. CITY COUNCIL RELIEF WORKS. A scheme which contemplates the erection of a cenotaph in the court of honour at the new Memorial Museum, the construction of approach steps to the court and the paving of said court was notified to the City Council last evening by the Auckland War Memorial Committee. In applying for permission to carry out the work as proposed, the committee informed the. council thai between 2000 and 3000 yards of spoil would be excavated in front of the museum to reach the correct levels for the court of honour. The acting city engineer estimated that the work of preparing the ground would cost £2240, and that a subsidy of £962 would be available from the Government if the work was carried out as an unemployment relief scheme. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, it was resolved that permission be granted and that the work of preparing the ground be included in the schedule of works passed for the_ relief of unemployment, also that application be made for a Government subsidy and loan. On the motion of the Mayor, the first suggestion was referred to the Finance Committee, and the second to the Water Committee for report. A suggestion that as part of its scheme of unemployment relief works the council should form an embankment around the waterfront at Point Chevalier, was received from the local businessmen's association. The suggestion was also made that the council should road and subdivide its property at Western Springs, the surplus stone to be used for the proposed seawall.
