BOLD EXPERIMENT.
Ship Entirely Dependent On Powdered Fuel. FIRST LLOYD'S REGISTER. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, August. 1. The Swiftpool is the first new steamship on Lloyd's British register designed for world trading, which is completely dependent on powdered fuel for firing. The ship was inspected by experts at West Hartlepool. She has a displacement of 9000 tons and is 421 feet long. She is unique in so far that she has no alternative for a hand-fired boiler, but is designed solely to operate on the brand new system of powdered fuel. The main bunkers have a capacity of 2000 tons and are arranged on the upper deck, a hatch being provided for trimming the coal into the daily service bunker. Two pulverisers are situated on the stokehold floor, convenient to the bunkers for breaking down the slack coal. There is a reserve fuel supply overhead in the stokehold sufficient for several hours' steaming with the pulverisers out of action.
