FOR THE GIRLS.

CANDLES THREE,

PETER AND WENDY IN THE HAPPINESS SHOP. M — — 'fi • 7 ;'v . Sip My Dear Girls, Candles of love, faith and joy twinUing round o"" birthday wlt JB thus we celebrate our beloved Budget's third birthday. Blue I, fj |g joy I like the sound, don't you? For m its steady light glows not one Ifa joy, but three. The joy of aeeing what is beautiful, the joy of f | and the very big joy of understanding. ' Peter and I went out this morning to buy our Happiness Candle,, M Of course we went to the Happiness Shop round the corner. Thil ||| a fascinating shop and only stock, such goods as happ.ness, JO y Md f§| magic—the magic of making children happy. When I caught ,igh t of || the blue birthday candles: "We will have a blue one tiis year, Peter," ||| I cried. "The candles have birds on them, too, what luck, ju«t wh»t |ife 1 want -" , . - ~. - m Then I'm sure I heard a child's laugh ring out just behind me at gg the candles were wrapped up, such a fat baby giggle. The giggi* Ma(k - me think of two birds I had heard about, that flew over a certain hou, e in London three years and a bit ago upon the occasion of a very impo r . M tant little lady's birthday. I will tell of it later. As we wandered ® round the shop I spied a tiny set of the dinkiest white china plates, cup, M and saucers, with pink apple blossoms on and two birds hovering above the flowers. Oh! Two for joy China! We are in luck to-day. Imagine finding [ « it here in Auckland, and as the plates were being wrapped up by the tik smiling assistant I distinctly heard that baby chuckle again. It wai like the baby laugh in Peter Pan that broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about. This laugh did too, it hopped about all over the place, it was so pleased itself. You are mysteriou, ftl to-day, Wendy," said Peter, "with your blue for joy and two for joy." "That makes five for joy," I laughed, "see it? One can't have too /\ much joy on a birthday. We must ourselves away and get back : p to the office and lay the tables for the party, and 111 tell you about Two for Joy. A bit over three years ago, Peter, if you had been stand- |'■ ing in a certain street in London, you might have noticed two black and white magpies hovering above a house. There is an old rhyme about, v magpies, 'One for sorrow, two for joy.' Thes£ two birds had been sent ; ;jf§| to herald the great joy which was brought to the Duke and Duchess of |g York, indeed the whole nation, upon the birth of Princess Elizabeth. 'Lillybel,' as she herself lisps at the age of three. The incident of the magpies has not been forgotten, and at 'Lillybel's' third birthday party, & the china on the table was of special design. The tiny white plates, || cups and saucers, had pink blossoms on and magpies in pairs flying across. So delighted was the Duchess with the china, that it was put on sale in the shops, so that other boys and girls might have the pleasure of using h. So you may guess how thrilled I was when I saw this very china in the B Happiness Shop. The Budget family are going to have their third birthday party from the same china, and there will be an added sweetness ;|1 and charm to our celebrations this year, owing to the glimpse of 'Baby Lillybel's' happy home life Peter and I surprised in the Happiness | Shop." Girls, many happy, happiest OLaJL^^ returns of the Budget's birthday, m N ± \ j* and don't forget, six o'clock is candle time.
