FUTURIST VASES FROM OLD JARS.
Gay flower-holders which will please the most ardent admirer of "jazz" colouring and ornament can be made from unwanted jam pots. These are quite effective when used in conjunction with certain schemes of furnishing and filled with the right kind of flowers, such as tulips or big daisies. -
A jar of the required shape and size is selected and should be carefully washed and dried and then painted all over evenly in black. Enamel may be used for the purpose or oil paint, but the latter should be carefully varnished when dry. On the black background, for decoration, any small brightly coloured motifs should be worked in with freehand brush\j'ork. Should any difficulty be found in doing this, paper butterflies, flowers, or geometrical shapes can be cut out and fixed on the jar, with a coat of varnish to make the surface even. The main idea is to obtain as vivid an effect as possible, and to do this it is not always necessary to .employ a great number of motifs. One great scarlet or jade butterfly,- or even a single flower, may be .all that is required to give the jar a distinctive touch. , Very big jam jars look well treated in this »■.!./. For smaller receptables the cardbo*. fa cartons can be used. These are rather convenient, as they can be cut off, bo any depth required. If the edge looks rough it can be finished with a narrow »dffe of bronze or silver sealing wax. Spot borders in sealing wax sometimes look J effective worked out around the top of the jar. All manner of schemes for decoration will suggest themselves, and, of course, it is not always necessary to keep to a black background.
