WATER SUPPLY.
Concern In Britain At Scarcity Of Rain. EXTREMELY DRY WEATHER. (British Official-Wireless.) lIUGBY, June 27. Tho shortage of rain during the past six months is causing concern in certain parts of England and Wales. The officials of the meteorological office of the Air Ministry say the decided deficiency during the winter months, frdin December to February, was most serious from the point of view of the water supply, for it is the rainfall of these months which percolates _ through the soil and maintains the springs and rivers. London and Birmingham received only half their normal rainfall in this period, and in Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Kent the rainfall was between- 30 and 3D per cent of the normal. Only 2.72 in of rain fell at Margate, Kent, during the first five months of the year, and 2.86 in at Shoeburyness, Essex. Even at Seathwaite, in the north of Lancashire, which has the highest average y,early rainfall in Britaiu, over 139 in, where 24.15 in were registered, rainfall was only 47 per cent of the average for these months.
