AT THE MARTS.
VEGETABLES IN OVER SUPPLY CHEAPEST FOOD TO-DAY. EGGS ALSO ARE LOWER. At the present time the auction are overstocked with most of the chief lines of vegetables, and prices generally are in buyers' favour. With swedes at 3/6 to 3/ a bag, celery from 1/ a bundle up, and root vegetables from od to 9d per dozen bunches, there is ample opportunity for the housewife to concoct broths and stews at prices suited to a small income. The quality, general speaking, is at its best just now, anil the appearance of the marts on a Friday morning is more like a horticultural exhibition than an ordinary business display. Latest quotations arc as follow: — Potatoes, Southern, 7/ to 8/ cwt; ouions, 4/ to 5/6 bag; kmnaras. local 4/ to 5/0 bag, Tauranga 10/ to 12/6 bap; cabbage; 1/ to 4/ sack; cauliflower, 3/ to 7/ sack; swedes, 1/6 to 3/ bag; pumpkins, 3/ to 6/ cwt; beans, 6/ to 14/ bag; lettuce, 1/ to 5/ case; vegetable marrows, 2/ to 3/6 dozen: citron melons, 6/. to 7/ cwt; cabbage, on benches, 1/ to 1/6 dozen; cauliflower, on benches, 2d to 6d each; celery, 1/ to 5/6 bunt'le; rhubarb, 1/6 to 2/6 dozen; spinach, Gd to Sd dozen; pumpkins, on benches, 4d to 1/ each; spring onions, 3d to Od bundle; radish, Od to 1/ dozen; carrots, parsnips, beet and turnips, 6d to 9d dozen; leeks, 2d to 3d bundle; eliokos, 1/ to 1/6 dozen. Fruit Dull Of Sale. The markets for fruit have been dull all the week, probably the result of unsuitable weather conditions. The demand for hothouse tomatoes has eased off considerably and local passions are very hard to quit. The demand both for lemons and Poorman oranges is poor. Prime dessert and cooking apples are meeting with a fair demand at late rates. Current quotations are as follow:—Apples: Delicious, extra fancy, picked sizes, 10/ to 11/; others, 6/ to 8/; Ballarats, 6/6 to 9/; Doughertys, 5/ to 7/6; Stumers.' 0/ to 8/; Parlins Beauty, 6/ to 8/; London Pippin, 6/ to 8/. Pears: Coles, 8/6 to. 9/; Nelis, 8/ to 9/; Clairgeau, 7/ to 7/6; Keiffers, 4/ to 6/; P. Barrys, 6/; others, 4/6 to 6/. Passions: Local, 6/ to 9/. Tree tomatoes: 3/ to 5/6. Tomatoes: Hothouse, 6d to 1/ lb; outdoor, 3/ to 6/ case. Lemons: No. 1, 9/ to-12/; No.'2, 5/ to 8/. Grapes: Choice Column, 2/6 to 3/2 lb; Colman, others, 1/9 to 2/ lb. Oranges: Island, repacks, 18/ to 19/ case; Poormans, 4/ to 6/; Navals. 16/ to IS/6. Bananas: Repacks, 23/ to 31/. Eggs Are Cheaper. Since last report the supplies of hen eggs have been much* better, arid prices liaye consequently eased. The fall lias been made more pronounced as the result of "cutting" by weak holders. Latest quotations for best quality are as follow:— Hen eggs, A grade, 2/ to 2/2; B's, 1/9 to 1/10. Ducks: A grade, 2/ to 2/2; B's, 1/10 to 1/11. Farmers' butter is in keen demand at 1/2 to 1/4 per lb.
