EMDEN'S TOUR.

THURSDAY ISLAND VISITED

THURSDAY ISLAND, June 17. The German warship Emden arrived and stayed for a few hours on Saturday, and then left for Auckland. Oil and coal supplies were taken aboard. The Emden was prepared to fire a salute, but those on board soon realised from the salute by a flag at the local military station, that there would be no exchange of guns. The ship's band then played "Under the Double Eagle." The Mayor and Lieutenant Kendall, oflicer-in-charge of the local defences, went aboard and greeted the captain, Commandant von Arnauld de la Periere, and Kapitan-Lieutenant Ernest Kreenberg. One of the mementoes in the room revealed that Commandant Periere had been in command of the German submarine U-30. None of the crew came ashore.
