TEST CRICKET.
AFRICA AHEAD.
Stonewalling Session By Mitchell ' Saves The Situation.
LEAD OF FIVE RUNS
(Australian Press Assn. —-United Service.)
(Received 11.30 a.m.)
LONDON, June 17,
A well-filled ground at' Birmingham saw the South Africans make a patient reply to England's moderate score. Though play was even slower than on Saturday, the spectators philosophically watched Mitchell's prolonged first Test stonewall, especially after lunch, when he scored eight runs in eighty minutes. He batted for six hours in scoring 80 runs. There was some excuse for care in the early stages, as the pitch was covered with dew.
Larwood once rose surprisingly and hit Mitchell badly in the face. The opening stand of 119 was the South African's best in Test cricket against England. They had never previously reached the hundred for the first wicket.
Larwood bowled at exceptional pace, sending Christie's stump fifteen yards. Mitchell went on lmperturbably while wickets fell, and the run-getting becamc slower than ever. All the bowlers were keeping an excellent length. White had a seventy minutes' spell aTter lunch, bowling fourteen overs, of which nine were maidens. The crowd was sorry to see Mitchell fail to get his century in his first Test. He has been called "the unbowlable boy." He batted for seven hours in a chanceless but wholly uninspired innings. The visitors' innings lasted 440 minutes. England batted for an hour before stumps were drawn. Scores:— SOUTH AFRICA.—First Innings.
