"PRETTY BAD THIEF."
ROBBED AN OLD MAN.
SPENT MONEY AT HACES.
ACCUSED GETS SIX MONTHS
Just how Emil Schimack, an old man, Mas robbed of £20 in a-boarding-house in Auckland on May 27 was told at the Police Court this morning when Eobert Blair Stewart pleaded guilty to a charge of theft
Schimack, said Chief Detective Hammond, was a farmer at Morrinsville, who was in Hamilton to purchase some stock. There he met the accused. The old man decided to come to Auckland to have a crippled leg treated. He was induced to ■go to a boardinghouse with Stewart, and both slept in the same room. At night Schimack saw accused remove £20 from a roll of notes amounting in all to £92.
"Stewart made good.use of the money at the races," said Mr. Hammond, "for when we got him he only had £3 on him. When arrested and searched a skeleton key was found in his pocket. Stewart is a pretty good thief and has a good few convictions. There is no chance of making him restore the money to the old man."
Mr. Hunt sent Stewart to prison for six months, and ordered that the £3 found on accused be handed to Schimack.
