TROTTING.

ASHBURTON CLUB.

SAPLING STAKES DAY.

GOOD CLASS IN CUP.

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS

. The, Ashburton Trotting Club's winter meeting will be held to-morrow, and as it brings the season to a close in the South Island it is not surprising there will be big fields.

The chief items are the Ashburton Cup and the New Zealand Sapling Stakes.

The Sapling Stakes, one mile and ahalf, is the only race set aside for two-year-olds in the Dominion's light harness sport, and the event creates considerable interest. After the final payment ten youngsters remain in the race, and more than one of them has raced at minor meetings. Two, Ngingo Ngingo and Purser, are winners, and have proved themselves able to run a smart twelve furlongs. Others are well spoken of, but it seems to be the popular opinion that J. Bryce has the best chalice with Ngingo Ngingo, and he promises to start a good favourite.

The Ashburton Cup, a 4.34 class, has drawn a very solid acceptance, and there are many proved smart two milers engaged. Evelyn Locanda looks the best of the limit lot, and her form recently has been both good and consistent. Travis Axworthy should be able to beat all on 12yds, while on 24yds Trimmer and Wrackler should be able to put up a fine effort. Huon Denver is a brilliant pacer when right, but it is some time since he did anything of note. St Maura and Trampfast are nicely placed to score, but the chances are when backers put on their thinking caps they will fine the issue down to Travis Axworthy and Wrackler, with Trimmer" next best.

Another good race on the programme is the Winter Handicap, the fast mile and a-quarter. There are many speedy horses in the race, and if the track happens to be good the winner will have to knock something off his handicap. Return Voyage and Great Logan aie an improving pair of pacers and they can go a merry ten furlongs.

The Trial and Longbeach Handicaps have slow limits, and the chances are the winners'of those races will have to go about ten seconds better than handicapped. In such races it is best to look on rather than try to select the winiur.

Horses who may get support in the remaining events are:—Acton Handicap: Editor, Myra Locanda. Stewards' Handicap: Tot Logan, Commander Bingen. Farewell Handicap: Logan Princess, Black Wattle.
