(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day,
One of the New Zealand representatives with Sir Douglas Mawson's forthcoming Antarctic expedition will be Mr. R. G. Simmers, of the Meteorological Office. He has been instructed to hold himself in readiness to proceed almost at once to England in order that he may join the Discovery before she sails next August. Mr: Simmers, who is 24 this month, was born and educated in Timaru, being dux of the High School, of which his father was for some time headmaster. He has always displayed a great interest in meteorology, and joined the Meteorological Office at the beginning of this year. The Discovery leaves England in August and proceeds to the Antarctic via Capetown and Australia. The object of the expedition is to acquire additional meteorological data, and to investigate the possibility of establishing meteorological stations in the Antarctic. The expedition is planned to finish its work within a year from the date of sailing.
